Introducing Papyrus: Where Research Meets Interactivity

In 1993, the first academic paper was published on the World Wide Web. It was a PDF. Thirty years later, most papers still are. We took the printing press, pointed it at the internet, and called it progress — but we never built anything native to the medium we were publishing into.

Papyrus is our answer to that problem.

The PDF Is a Lossy Format

A static paper can tell you what an experiment found. It cannot let you run it. It can describe a mathematical relationship. It cannot let you move the variables and watch the outcome change. It can print a figure. It cannot let you zoom, filter, or play it back in time.

That gap is not cosmetic. It is costing us in three currencies that matter: reproducibility, comprehension, and reach.

Start with reproducibility. By now most researchers know the numbers — a 2016 Nature survey found that more than 70% of scientists had failed to reproduce another researcher's results, and more than half had failed to reproduce their own. The usual explanations are real enough: underpowered studies, publication bias, p-hacking. But there is a quieter culprit that rarely gets named — the paper itself. A static document is, by definition, a lossy compression of a research project. The author decides what to keep and what to drop, and those decisions are irreversible. A reader cannot ask the paper a clarifying question, cannot see the intermediate steps, cannot rerun the analysis to check the result.

The same compression erodes comprehension. Picture a neuroscientist with a vivid, dynamic model of a network activation pattern — alive in their head and in their simulator — flattened into a handful of 2D figures for print. Now a policy analyst at a health ministry reads those figures to inform a funding decision, without the author's mental model to rebuild from. The insight arrives garbled: useful data, degraded in transmission. Give that same reader an interactive version they can rotate, threshold, and play back at different speeds, and the insight arrives intact.

What Papyrus Does Differently

Papyrus is a publishing platform built around a single conviction: the best way to communicate an idea is often to let someone experience it.

Articles on Papyrus are written in MDX — ordinary Markdown that can also embed live components. You write your paper much as you would in LaTeX or Word, but now you can drop in:

  • Interactive visualizations that respond to the reader's scroll position
  • Live simulations that let readers manipulate your experimental parameters
  • Animated explainers that walk through hard concepts one step at a time
  • Data explorers that let readers filter, sort, and interrogate your dataset

We call these embedded experiences Visual Packs. They are versioned, sandboxed, and loaded lazily, so they never slow your article down — they come alive precisely when the reader reaches them.

The Bridge: Narrative Drives the Experience

The most powerful piece of Papyrus is the Bridge Protocol — the channel that lets an article's text speak to its Visual Packs in real time.

As a reader scrolls, they cross Cues: invisible markers the author places in the prose. When a Cue fires, it tells the relevant Visual Pack to change state, and the visualization responds. The narrative drives the interactive experience. The reader never has to figure out how to operate a complex simulation — they simply read, and the article does the rest.

This is also why Papyrus articles are accessible by default. Because they are built on modern web standards rather than print emulation, screen readers receive real semantic HTML, images carry alt text, notation renders in accessible formats, and the same article can present itself differently to different audiences — specialist and generalist, expert and newcomer.

For Researchers

Papyrus is for researchers who want their work to matter beyond the lab. If you have ever wished you could show a reviewer exactly how your experiment ran, or help a non-specialist follow your method without a wall of jargon, this is for you.

Publishing does not require writing code. You author your article, add your Visual Packs (or pull from our library of pre-built ones), and publish. The platform handles the rest: hosting, versioning, analytics, and sharing.

For Institutions

Universities, think tanks, and independent labs can build a presence on Papyrus under their own brand. Every article your researchers publish appears on your institution's page — your logo, your colors, your mission statement — turning Papyrus into a living portfolio of your output, one that showcases the exploratory nature of your work instead of burying it in a repository PDF.

The Paper of the Future

We believe the academic paper of the future is not a file. It is a web-native document that:

  • Shows its methodology through interactive simulation, not just describes it
  • Invites the reader to explore, rather than only consume
  • Adapts to different audiences, from expert to novice
  • Updates when the research does, with version history that preserves the original
  • Travels across the web as a living artifact, not a static file attachment

We have already built the infrastructure — the Visual Pack system, the Bridge Protocol, the institution pages, the admin tools. Now we are inviting researchers to fill it with their work.
